Moomin Characters。

A brave and loyal friend

Moomintroll is kind, caring and curious, a great lover of nature and a true friend. His life is full of excitement and adventure, thanks to his daring companions and the tolerant – and somewhat eccentric – Moominmamma and Moominpappa. Although he can be a sensitive character, anxious not to offend and susceptible to being teased (especially by Little My…), Moomintroll is bold and courageous whenever it is required of him. He is inclined to look for the positives in any situation and to embrace every experience that presents itself, making him a lot of fun to spend time with!

“Isn’t life exciting! Everything can change all of a sudden, and for no reason at all!”

(Moomintroll, in the book Moominpappa at Sea, 1965)

---------------------------------------------------
An excitable dreamer

Snorkmaiden is a creative and excitable dreamer whose imagination comes in handy on adventures. She is very resourceful and quick-thinking, which often leads to her saving the day in style with a unique and ingenious solution. For example, she once rescued Moomintroll from a deep-sea octopus with nothing other than a ruby looking-glass. She enjoys acting out stories about beautiful maidens and brave heroes – with herself and Moomintroll in the leading roles, of course.

“I’ll have to calm down a bit. Or else I’ll burst with happiness.”
(Moominsummer Madness, 1954)

---------------------------------------------------

Moominmamma

Moominmamma is the gentle and nurturing heart of the Moomin family. She has a special skill for ensuring that people feel cared for and welcome to be themselves. Her housekeeping might seem unusual to some – she’d rather leave the dishes out in the rain than wash them herself – and she has a rebellious streak and a great love of fun. Nature is very important to her, and she tends her garden with the same care as she tends to her family. Moominmamma is never seen without her handbag, which contains the solution to many problems – along with dry socks, string, bark, sweets and tummy powder!

‘“There’s a lot of things one can’t understand,” Moominmamma said to herself. “But why should everything be exactly as one is used to having it.”’

(Moominsummer Madness, 1954)

---------------------------------------------------
Moominpappa
An adventure-loving father

Moominpappa thinks he’s a great thinker, a talented storyteller and a fearless traveler – and his family are always happy to indulge him! Moominmamma especially lets him play the hero and always welcomes his ‘help’ (even when others might consider it ‘interfering’…) Being a restless sort, Moominpappa occasionally longs for adventure or for something new and exciting to happen, but he is an honourable Moomin who always tries to fulfil his duties.
“The world is full of great and wonderful things for those who are ready for them”
(Moominpappa at Sea, 1965)

---------------------------------------------------

The wise adventurer

Snufkin is a philosopher and a wanderer who enjoys the simple things in life – fishing, playing his harmonica and walking alone at night. A free spirit with no interest in owning things, Snufkin enjoys challenging authority figures such as park keepers. He greatly values his independence, but returns to Moominvalley every spring to spend time with his good friend Moomintroll. Snufkin is widely admired for his quiet confidence and self-belief, especially by the smaller and more timid residents of Moominvalley.

It’s the right evening for a tune, Snufkin thought. A new tune, one part expectation, two parts spring sadness, and for the rest, just the great delight of walking alone and liking it.
Walking had been easy, because his knapsack was nearly empty and he had no worries on his mind. He felt happy about the wood and the weather, and himself. Tomorrow and yesterday were both at a distance, and just at present the sun was shinning brightly red between the birches, and the air was cool and soft.’

 (Tales from Moominvalley, 1962 )

---------------------------------------------------

Little My
Small but fierce

Little My is fiery and independent – a tiny character with an enormous personality! Known for her sharp tongue, quick temper and mischievous nature, she seems to thrive in dangerous situations and sometimes takes pleasure in the small misfortunes that befall others. But still, she is loyal, protective, and an honest friend, and her bravery makes her a good person to have around in a crisis. Little My lives with the Moomins in the Moominhouse.
I don’t care a fig for other people’s secrets. And I certainly don’t broadcast them all over the place. Anyway, they all come out sooner or later.”
(Moominpappa at Sea, 1965)

---------------------------------------------------

Sniff
A cautious but enthusiastic companion

Sniff is something of a younger sibling to Moomintroll, having been adopted by the Moomin family at an early age. He is good-natured, loyal, excitable, and eager to join in any mission, but his taste for adventure is not often matched by his bravery… He dreams of finding riches and is particularly taken with the idea of owning anything sparkly or valuable.

I saw it first!” squeaked Sniff, “I must choose a name for it. Wouldn’t it be fun to call it Sniff? That’s so short and sweet.
(Finn Family Moomintroll, 1948)

---------------------------------------------------

Snork

Snork is the Snorkmaiden’s diligent and ingenious brother. He’s exceptionally talented at building new machines and coming up with new inventions. The residents of Moominvalley often ask Snork for help in solving tricky problems.

Snork is also good with his hands and sometimes constructs his own complex inventions in his workshop. It was here that he built his bizarre flying contraption. As an avid reader, Snork researches things for himself and then passes on his knowledge and observations to others.

When required, Snork rolls up his sleeves and skilfully organises even the most demanding of projects. Precision is crucial to him. He won’t hesitate to explain how he thinks problems can be solved, which is why he’s considered a bit of a know-it-all.

Snork has a fringe and wears square-framed glasses. Like his sister, Snorkmaiden, he also changes colour according to his mood. We first meet him in the book Comet in Moominland.

---------------------------------------------------
Stinky
A loveable rogue

Stinky is a small, irate creature who is often causing trouble for the other residents of Moominvalley. He is a villain, and proud of it! He’s never one to let an opportunity for personal gain pass him by, and he always has a scheme or a racket on the go. Even though he’s a known criminal, the Moomin family takes some pride in being on good terms with Stinky. Stinky has a fuzzy body, skinny legs and two little antennae instead of ears.

“What are you doing, Stinky?”
“Eating your house. It has a rather good taste!”
“Can’t I bring you some pancake instead?”
“No! But bring me some salt, your chairs need it badly.”
(Moomin and the Brigands comic strip, (1954)

---------------------------------------------------
The Hattifatteners
The restless wanderers of Moominvalley

Hattifatteners are mysterious creatures whose only motivation in life is to keep moving towards the horizon. They are pale grey-white in colour and look something like mushroom stalks with paws that extend directly from their trunks. They grow from little white seeds – but only if the seeds are sown on Midsummer’s Eve – and can become charged up with electricity in lightning storms.

…the little white creatures who are for ever wandering restlessly from place to place, in their aimless quest for nobody knows what.’

(Comet in Moominland, 1946)

---------------------------------------------------
Thingumy and Bob
An inseparable duo

Thingumy and Bob are two shy little creatures who arrive in Moominvalley carrying a mysterious suitcase. They’re a private pair, preferring to keep themselves to themselves and even speaking their own special language. They have a habit of taking things that don’t belong to them, but they mean no harm and usually return an item if they can see it’s sorely missed by its owner.

And they began to wander down to the valley talking in the strange way that Thingumies and Bobs do talk. (It isn’t clear to everyone but the main thing is they understand one another.)
(Finn Family Moomintroll, 1948)

---------------------------------------------------

Fillyjonks

Fillyjonks like order, routine, and discipline. They become panicked if things get muddled up and frustrated if others don’t behave to their liking. They share an obsession with keeping their homes spotlessly clean, and it often takes a crisis to set them free of their long lists of chores! Mrs Fillyjonk is the most well-known fillyjonk in Moominvalley.
How can I go on living if I can neither clean or prepare food? There’s nothing else worth doing.”
(Moominvalley in November, 1970)

According to Moominmamma, the ancestors used to live behind tiled stoves.

---------------------------------------------------

Mymble
An easy-going teller of tall tales

Mymble is Little My’s big sister and an imaginative type – she is frequently to be found spinning stories and making up fantastical tales. From a young age she was often left in charge of her very many siblings, but that responsibility was too much for her carefree spirit! She much prefers her independent life in Moominvalley, where she is free to do as she pleases, finding delight in small pleasures and living in the moment.

Now I’m full of ferocity, she thought. I could do anything, but instead I’ll do nothing. Isn’t it marvellous to do just what one feels like?”
(Moominvalley in November, 1970)

--------------------------------------------------

Too-ticky
A practical problem-solver

Too-ticky is both pragmatic and compassionate, two things which the Moomin family value greatly in their neighbour. A deep thinker by nature, she lives modestly and in harmony with the world around her, content in her own company but also willing to help any creature in need. Too-ticky doesn’t want to tell others how to live, as she believes it’s best for everyone to learn for themselves through experience. She doesn’t let things get to her and can be relied upon to bring her practical problem-solving skills to bear on any dilemma.

All things are so very uncertain, and that’s exactly what makes me feel reassured”
(Moominland Midwinter, 1957)

The Muskrat likes to spend time in the family’s hammock, reading his favourite book: The Uselessness of Everything. ---------------------------------------------------
The Island Ghost

The Island Ghost attempts to scare the young Moominpappa. The stairs begin to creak and Moominpappa’s room becomes cold and scary. When the ghost sneezes and hits its head against the doorjamb, Moominpappa’s fear turns into laughter. The Island Ghost also tries to scare the remaining members of the Royal Colony: Mymble’s daughter, Joxter, Hodgkins, and the Muddler, to no effect. As a result, the Island Ghost gets very upset and tries scaring the company relentlessly. Finally, the Island Ghost is invited to attend a special Ghost Council with the Board of the Royal Colony, where it is elected a member of the Royal Colony and named The Terror of Horror Island.

One autumn, he decides to visit Moominvalley, but all the Moomintroll’s have left and nobody knows whether or not they will return. In the house, Toft finds an old book with long words, of which he doesn’t understand much. He believes it to be a story and, with the help of his imagination, he creates a creature that turns out to be big and aggressive.

Toft is the only one who remains in the Moominhouse to greet the Moomins when they return, if they return.

---------------------------------------------------

The Hobgoblin

The Hobgoblin lives on the top of a mountain at the end of the world, in a house without a roof and full of precious stones. He rides his flying panther around the world, looking for red rubies. The Hobgoblin has magic powers and can turn into anything. Most of the time, however, he is just a bearded man with red eyes, white gloves, a cloak and a magic hat to gather his rubies in.

The Hobgoblin is obsessed with rubies. More than anything, he wishes to find the King’s Ruby – the biggest ruby in the entire world. Surprisingly, he finds it one day in Moominvalley. At first sight, the Moomins are slightly frightened of the Hobgoblin, but they later decide that someone who eats pancakes can’t be that dangerous.

Hemulens
Great lovers of rules and responsibility

The hemulens all share certain character traits: they like order, believe in duty, and strongly feel that rules and regulations should be followed – to the letter. They are prone to obsess over collecting things (whether that be plants, stamps or insects) and tend to be a bit bossy. Most of them lack a sense of humour, but they can also be surprisingly convivial and high-spirited!

The Hemulen always wore a dress that he had inherited from his aunt. I believe all Hemulens wear dresses. It seems strange, but there you are.’

Later she decides to help Moominpappa write a play, which the rest of the family get to perform on stage. At the dress rehearsal, Emma turns surprisingly calm and patient, although nothing goes as it should.

Emma was married to the late Stage Manager Fillyjonk, whose niece is Fillyjonk.

Although he cares about nothing but sports, both Snorkmaiden and Mymble are rather taken with him.

---------------------------------------------------
Ninny, the invisible child

Ninny is an invisible child, with a silver bell around her neck to keep track of her. Ninny became invisible after her caretaker, a dreadful lady, mistreated her. The caretaker gave Ninny to Too-ticky who, in turn, took her to the Moomin family.

The Moomins welcome Ninny with open arms. She gets her own room in the attic and already after her first night in the Moomin house her feet are visible. Moominmamma makes Ninny a dress, after which Ninny speaks for the first time since her arrival. As time passes, Ninny becomes more and more visible, until it is just her face missing.

Moomintroll really wants to help Ninny, and tries to teach her how to play. It doesn’t go very well, as Ninny only plays to be polite. According to Little My, Ninny will never become visible again unless she learns how to be angry. This turns out to be true. Ninny doesn’t become visible until she gets really, really angry.
